I forgot to include that we also selected a book for June (date to be determined). For June we will read Descent into Chaos: The U.S. and the Disaster in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia, by Ahmed Rashid.
Hello Everyone, We had a good meeting Wednesday night to discuss The Old American, by Ernest Hebert. Most of us really enjoyed the book and would recommend it if you haven't read it yet. Thanks to Lisa for suggesting it. For May we are reading Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy, by Peter S. Canellos, Washington bureau chief for the Boston Globe. We will meet on Tuesday night, May 26, 6:30 PM in the Food Court at Colony Mill Market Place. Please note that the meeting is on a Tuesday this month, the day after Memorial Day. I hope to see you then. Linda

We had a good meeting last night to discuss American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, by Jon Meacham. We all enjoyed the book and felt we ended up with a much better understanding of that age in American history. It was interesting to see that one of Jackson's major accomplishments was keeping the Union intact. It was also interesting to see how politics as we know it, began during Jackson's presidency. For March, we will be reading The Devil's Highway: A True Story by Luis Alberto Urrea. Immigration is one of the topics that we haven't yet read about, so we are looking forward to this book. We will meet on Wednesday, March 11, 6:30 PM, in the Food Court at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope you can join us. For April, we are going to read The Old American, by local author, Ernest Hebert. Future topics that we'd like to read about include Russia, Latin America, and NAFTA. If anyone has a good book to suggest on one of those topics, we'd love to hear about it. Linda Cates

Hello Everyone, We had an excellent and well-attended meeting last week. As a follow-up to November's book, Hot Flat and Crowded, Tara Sad, State Rep. from Walpole and a member of the Environment Committee, spoke to us about some of the energy initiatives that the Sate of New Hampshire is working on. We also discussed local initiatives under way in Keene and Walpole. Thanks to Tara for coming and for leading a very good discussion. Our discussion of The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope, by Jonathan Alter, was also excellent. We learned so many things about FDR, and the Depression, that many of us did not already know. FDR's very practical approach to dealing with the crisis, and the way he inspired confidence in the American people, are truly inspirational and we are glad that Obama read this book in preparation for his presidency. The book for February is American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, by Jon Meacham. During Inauguration coverage on TV, one of the commentators mentioned that Andrew Jackson was the first president who was not an aristocrat. The comment left me wondering if at that time, that was as big a change for the American people as the inauguration of the first African-American president. We will meet to discuss American Lion on Wednesday, February 11, 6:30 PM in the Food Court at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope to see you there.
