Cheshire County Democrats Book Club
Hello Everyone, We had an excellent and well-attended meeting last week. As a follow-up to November's book, Hot Flat and Crowded, Tara Sad, State Rep. from Walpole and a member of the Environment Committee, spoke to us about some of the energy initiatives that the Sate of New Hampshire is working on. We also discussed local initiatives under way in Keene and Walpole. Thanks to Tara for coming and for leading a very good discussion. Our discussion of The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope, by Jonathan Alter, was also excellent. We learned so many things about FDR, and the Depression, that many of us did not already know. FDR's very practical approach to dealing with the crisis, and the way he inspired confidence in the American people, are truly inspirational and we are glad that Obama read this book in preparation for his presidency. The book for February is American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, by Jon Meacham. During Inauguration coverage on TV, one of the commentators mentioned that Andrew Jackson was the first president who was not an aristocrat. The comment left me wondering if at that time, that was as big a change for the American people as the inauguration of the first African-American president. We will meet to discuss American Lion on Wednesday, February 11, 6:30 PM in the Food Court at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope to see you there.
